Putting the “Fun” in Fundraising

02/03/2013

WICC Alberta has been motivating some very creative fundraising, something they call “Hooray Hooray, the First of May”.   The event was introduced by the WICC Alberta Board several years ago, to give companies a reason to fundraise, just for the sake of fundraising.  It is a month-long, inter-office, inter-departmental challenge.  While it promotes a worthwhile charitable cause, it also increases employee engagement, facilitates team building and fosters a social environment within your organization.

One of the events that Intact has run during Hooray Hooray, the First of May, is “Penny Bomb”, which takes advantage of the recent government decision to eliminate the penny.  But this is no ordinary Penny drive…each area is issued a collection container in which to collect their pennies.  The catch is, if a coin other than a penny appears in the container, it counts “against” the number of pennies collected – nickel is minus 5, toonie is minus 200 – and no one is allowed to remove coins from the container!  This promotes inter-departmental sabotage while raising more money than just the pennies.  Brilliant!
