RELAY FOR LIFE – TORONTO – JUNE 8, 2023 – CANCELLED DUE TO POOR AIR QUALITY
Over the past several days, the WICC Relay planning committee has worked closely with the Canadian Cancer Society’s leadership team to monitor the wildfire situation and air quality conditions in the GTA area. Due to the Air Quality rating in Toronto, forecast to be a level 9 today, June 8, CCS have made the very difficult decision to cancel the Relay For Life event scheduled for today.
The safety of all participants, volunteers and staff remains the top priority and has guided CCS’ decision-making process. CCS are in turn, acting in accordance with The Government of Canada’s Air Quality Index that advises when air quality ratings are high or very high that people reduce or avoid outdoor activities, which is the case here.
Relay For Life Toronto 2023 will not be rescheduled. Relay For Life National events on June 10th are ongoing.
We look forward to next year’s Relay For Life.
Please feel free to reach out to us at info@wicc.ca for more detail.
Relay For Life is more than a fundraiser — it’s a chance for you to send a powerful message of solidarity to your community. We all have our reasons in getting involved: to fight, to survive, to honour our loved ones, to create awareness, to make a difference! Whatever your reasons are, we have a tremendous group to lead this journey.
“Whether you’re cheering on survivors, walking the track or participating in exciting trackside activities, Relay For Life has been an unforgettable event for WICC and its participants over the last 15 years,” said Relay For Life Chair Amanda Martin, Director at Northbridge Insurance Go. “This year, to keep up with our community’s busy schedules, we will be hosting the event on a weeknight. With this change, we hope to engage with even more members in-person, all while supporting a meaningful cause.”
The 2023 event marks WICC’s 15th year of participation at Relay For Life. As a longstanding and dedicated partner of the Canadian Cancer Society, WICC has raised over $19 million for cancer research to date. The fundraising goal for this year’s Relay For Life campaign is $250,000. In 2022, the event raised a total of over $200,000 in donations and corporate sponsor support.
Relay For Life Toronto will take place on Thursday, June 8 at Stackt Market, near Bathurst/Front, from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm EST.
