Project MOVE

Despite the health benefits associated with physical activity (PA) for female breast cancer (BC) survivors, this segment of the population consistently reports low rates of PA. Innovative approaches for increasing PA among the nearly 450 women diagnosed with BC every week in Canada are needed. Dr. Caperchione and her research team will examine and evaluate a novel approach to increasing PA levels of BC survivors through the use of an Action Grant model, a scheme in which a small amount of monetary support (microgrants) and incentive funds are awarded to successful community-based applicants to develop, implement and sustain a PA program specifically targeting BC survivors, while promoting a sense of empowerment and ownership for BC survivors.

HAT-TRICK

The incidence of cancer in men is expected to increase consistently, creating a clear need for effective interventions that foster healthy behavior change. However, men are traditionally resistant to such health promotion efforts. Therefore, this innovative men-friendly intervention seeks to explicitly align with men’s interests and values through a sport-themed design and delivery. In collaboration with the Kelowna Rockets Hockey Team, the HAT-TRICK program was designed to increase physical activity, improve nutritional habits and enhancing social connectedness for inactive men living in the Okanagan Region. This dynamic 12-week face-to-face program will promote greater community connectedness among participants as well as empower them with strategies and skills to assist them with engaging in physical activity and healthy eating in ways that are enjoyable and meaningful to men.
