Picture yourself walking a track while hundreds of people – family, friends, co-workers and neighbours – cheer you on. The baton you hold in your hand is a powerful symbol of your personal commitment to make an impact in the fight against cancer. You walk a grass track under an umbrella of trees and a starry sky in the middle of the city – surrounded by teammates and industry colleagues and you feel an overwhelming sense of pride in knowing you’re united with Canadians in communities across the country to create a world where no one fears cancer.

On Friday, June 12, 2015 WICC held its annual Relay for Life at the historic Garrison Common in downtown Toronto. This was the first time the industry exclusive event was held at the downtown location and from all reports, participants enjoyed the feel of walking through a ‘forest in the city’ with spectacular views of the CN Tower lighting their way throughout the night.  55 teams took part in the annual all-night event benefitting the Canadian Cancer Society.  The teams raised an incredible $200,000 in pledges and the 2015 WICC Ontario Relay campaign has raised a staggering $400,000 to date.

WICC Ontario Event Co-chairs Mariellen Glover (Intact Insurance) and Paul Martin (RRJ Insurance Group Limited) and their dedicated committee of volunteers worked together with the Canadian Cancer Society to organise the entire event which ran seamlessly despite the rain that fell at the beginning of the night.

From Friday evening to Saturday morning, participants were treated to inspiring talks by survivors, speeches by Relay for Life sponsors and supporters, delicious food and drink, music, movies and many other free activities.

As happens every year, the relay hours flew by until it was time for the final victory lap at 6am.  Afterwards, everyone enjoyed fresh coffee and (rather amazing!) fresh Panera bagels and wondered where the time had gone as we packed up our tents and chairs and promised to return again next year.

If you haven’t participated in WICC’s Relay for Life mark your calendar for next June – you’ll have a lot of fun while helping WICC create a world where no one fears cancer.
