Please join us on Tuesday, May 4 as we host our Inaugural “Hooray Hooray the 1st of May” Breakfast!  Different times call for different measures, and we are happy to be able to host this virtual webinar as a kick-off to WICC Alberta’s month long “Hooray, Hooray the 1st of May” annual fundraising campaign to get you thinking of ways that you can continue to support WICC Alberta and our efforts to donate to cancer research during the pandemic.

The primary objective of the breakfast is to provide information that will help guests achieve a better understanding of the exciting research and initiatives taking place right here in Alberta, and how WICC Alberta is working to support those efforts!  WICC Alberta has been partnering with doctors, researchers and clinicians in Alberta to raise funds to support their work and make Alberta a world-class centre for cancer research and innovation, and thanks to your support over the last 21 years we have been able to raise over $3 Million dollars!

While we continue our fight against COVID-19, we have had to adapt to the conditions which we find ourselves living and working in, and we hope that this virtual Breakfast will provide an opportunity for you to continue to learn about critical and fascinating work being done to make cancer history.

We are pleased to host you on a virtual platform with Dr. Douglas Mahoney and Dr. Craig Jenne, both of the University of Calgary, as our speakers. The presentation will be an update on the “ACTION INITIATIVE”.

Dr.  Mahoney is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Disease, at the University of Calgary Charbonneau Cancer Institute and Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute.

Dr. Mahoney’s lab is developing novel virus- and T cell-based immunotherapies for treating pediatric solid tumours and other cancers. They use a variety of standard and cutting-edge multidisciplinary techniques, including intravital microscopy and other in vivo imaging modalities; flow cytometry and other standard immunology methods; high-throughput drug, RNAi and CRISPR screening; genetic engineering of viruses, cancer and T cells; and next-generation sequencing.

You’ve likely all seen Dr. Craig Jenne over the past year as he has been one of the vaccine experts on our local news stations speaking about COVID-19!  Dr. Jenne is an Associate Professor, in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases and Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Calgary, and also a Canada Research Chair.

Dr. Jenne started his research career as a graduate student at the University of Calgary and returned following the completion of this post-doctoral position.During his time in Dr. Kubes’ lab, Dr. Jenne has developed a number of models to study the innate immune response to viral and highly pathogenic bacterial infections.Dr. Jenne has a faculty appointment within the department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases and the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Calgary and is continuing his work using intravital microscopy to study the early innate immune response to viral and bacterial infections

What better way to start the day than an hour with friends, a hot cup of coffee and learning the importance of coming together as an industry to raise money for an important cause?  This year, more than ever, your support counts – because cancer doesn’t go on lockdown.
